Our designers can guide you on approaching windows in historic buildings to ensure their character, appearance and integrity are kept intact.

Windows significantly impact the character and appearance of a building, particularly on the properties listed or situated within a conservation area.

To protect the appearance of such buildings, proposals to carry out work which will alter the design, detailing, materials or method of operation of the windows require prudent consideration.

The historic and traditional buildings display various window designs and materials, ranging from early mullioned timber windows with 16th and 17th-century iron casements to Georgian and Victorian timber sliding sashes and 20th-century metal Crittall windows.

Each particular county has its regulations, but usually:

  1. Repair of windows should replicate the window's design, materials and mechanical operation. Some minor repairs may be considered di minimus and not require a listed building consent. However, this should be agreed in writing by the local planning authority.

  2. New openings in existing listed buildings should reflect the significance of elevation, and it may be possible to deviate away from the original design to reflect the modernity of the opening. These works will likely be the subject of further design analysis and discussion with the local authority.

All new openings will require a listed building consent.

New Extensions: require similar agreements as “New Openings” above; however, double glazing (provided it matches the listed buildings regulations) may be employed. However, UPVC windows will not be acceptable.
